McDonagh’s play tells the story of the toxic relationship between a mother and her daughter. The two live in the small Irish village of Leenane, spending their days in endless routine and constant reproach toward one another.

Reviews

“Meg shuffles into the room in a crumpled, indeterminate-coloured nightgown, grumbling as she sinks into a shaky armchair and gives us the first surprise - behind the heavily made-up old woman’s grumpy features it is hard even for those in the know to recognise Mārtiņš Kalita. Although the character carries a clear touch of grotesque, the synthesis of the actor’s inner feeling and external form is flawless. His entire psychophysical presence works like a Swiss watch – neither too fast nor too slow – precisely reflecting the fluctuations of Meg’s inner barometer in every stage situation. An entirely unexpected and therefore even more impressive acting achievement by Mārtiņš Kalita.”

“Inese Kučinska’s ability to balance the movements of Maureen’s heart and mind within a unified portrayal and make them visible to everyone in the audience is yet another confirmation of the magic of acting, for which it is worth going to the theatre again and again.”

“This idea of the performance is embodied with immense inner and outer strength by Inese Kučinska’s Maureen, portraying both the rough, internally broken being and the woman desperately clinging to hope for her share of happiness. When dreams and longing ignore the outlines of reality, the heart cries out for love and happiness while the mind cannot comprehend that everything is already lost. An enormous emotional range within a single role and an actor’s virtuosity guiding the audience through all the labyrinths of the soul. It is a powerful and passionate performance – the main attraction of this production.”
