What if one day you wake up and can't tell the difference between a dream and real life?
In the world of Pedro Calderón's famous play, power, (non)freedom, and fate are so intertwined that it's difficult to immediately determine who is a prisoner and who is the master of their own lives. Here, the royal palace is just a stone's throw away from the dungeon (and vice versa!). Here, love can turn into a trial, power into an illusion, and victory into defeat. There are no easy answers or safe solutions. Calderón transforms the stage into a space where familiar concepts begin to flicker and waver, like... like in a dream?..
It's very easy to lock a person away, but is it really that easy to lock away their will? Can one learn to be free if they've been told their whole life that their fate is predetermined? And what's more frightening: waking up from a dream or discovering that reality itself is nothing more than a dream?
The play was written nearly four hundred years ago, yet its questions sound strikingly contemporary: how free are we in our decisions, and who, in fact, determines what we become?
"Life is a Dream" is not only a philosophical play about fate, but also a tense story about a person trying to discover and understand themselves. And perhaps, the main question here is not whether our life is a dream, but what we become while we think we are awake.
