Kārlis Lācis

Karlis Lacis is a composer, whose name in Latvia no longer requires comment. An artist, whose creative range is amazing - academic and choral music, instrumental experiments and music for theatrical productions, jazz and pop music.

His works include symphonies, popular and award-winning theater productions, collaborations with the best Latvian musicians, a Song Festival and chamber music concerts. He is known not only as a composer, but also as a pianist and producer. Karlis Lacis is a sought-after arranger, who tirelessly explores new possibilities of arrangement and instrumentation.

The variety music projects have received international recognition, captivating audiences not only in Latvia, but also in foreign countries. Karlis Lacis is recognized by critics for his versatility and professionalism, praised by colleagues for his fanatically serious attitude to work and work abilities, and in demand by the public for his special style and mood.

“My work is a big whole. It is formed gradually - over the years, with experience, when you can meet the expectations, placed on yourself. I am grateful that I can enjoy this, and I know that my “debt” to the listeners for their trust is music,” the composer says in an interview.

Karlis Lacis was born on September, 21, 1977 in Tukum. He studied at Kandava Children's Music School (piano class), Kandava Secondary School (1984–1992), Riga Jazeps Mediņš College of Music (piano class) (1992–1997) and the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music, where he studied piano with Juris Kalnciems (1997–2001, bachelor's degree; 2003–2005, master's degree), as well as composition with Juris Carlson (2001–2002).

Main awards:

  • Nominations for the "Night of Actors" award in the category "Musical Performance of the Year" - "Blow, Breeze!" (2011) and "Onegin" (2013).
  • Nomination for the "Latvian Music Recordings of the Year" award in the category "Album of the Year for Children" - "The Songs of Papa Bear" ("Lāču tēta dziesmas") (2012).
  • Winner of the "Diena" newspaper award in the field of culture for the work “The temptation of Choosing a Moment” (“Mirkļa izvēles vilinājums”) for symphony orchestra (2006), album and concert program “Ziedonis. Lācis. Women" (2013) and the song cycle "In the Forest" (2013).
